april's been a lot.

today i made black peppercorn and rosemary old fashioneds (needed more pepper), hung art, and threw away a bunch of old ikea instruction booklets and an air mattress with a hole in it.

changed scab-cat's bandage vest; was lime green, now fluorescent orange.

learned a bunch about the history of screws.

looked up the past twenty years of award winning bearded iris varieties.

The history of screws sounds even more fascinating than my recent wiki-walks about motorsport.

I mean, uh, that sentence probably reads as sarcasm to people who usually do sarcasm, but screws sound interesting to an epic degree.

I would never accuse someone about sarcasm re: niche interests! The book's called One Good Turn, by Witold Rybczynski and it's fascinating! (Eurocentric and about Male Genius a little more than I like, but still FASCINATING.)

For a similar book about small useful tools that we now take for granted, try Henry Petroski's The Evolution of Useful Things, which isn't quite as well-written but includes the invention of forks, zippers, and paperclips, which is exactly my THING.
